Metamorphosis of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw Es

The Metamorphosis of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw    The benefits of acquiring an education are not limited to the academic aspects often associated with it. Part of the edification it bestows includes being enabled to reach new insight, being empowered to cultivate a new awareness, and being endowed with a new understanding of life and of self. In Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, Eliza Doolittle experiences this type of enlightenment as the result of undergoing a drastic change in social status. With the sponsorship and guidance of Colonel Pickering, Eliza, a common street flower vendor, receives phonetic instruction from Professor Henry Higgins and is transformed into an elegant and refined "duchess" (817). Eliza Doolittle is highly emotional and has dauntless pride; however, her level of confidence increases as she gains a new perception of herself and a new outlook on life through the instruction she receives. Although in the beginning of the play Eliza Doolittle possesses a dignity of self that has persevered despite the lowliness of her social status as a "draggletailed guttersnipe" (817), she has little confidence and a low sense of worth. By describing Eliza's emotional states throughout the play, Shaw illuminates the evolution of Eliza's character. In the opening act when Eliza receives the impression that she is being "charged" for "taking advantage of [a] gentleman's proximity" to persuade him to "buy a flower," Shaw describes that she becomes "terrified" and claims, "I ain't done nothing wrong . . . I've a right to sell flowers . . ." (806). Eliza's initial feeling of fear points to a momentary sense of self-doubt in her character; however, her solid pride leads her to make a declaration in def... ...f" as she "sweeps out" (864). Too proud to be bossed around, Eliza is confident enough to stand her ground and defend her dignity without being timid. Although it was in Eliza's sensitive nature to "fetch slippers," now she "won't care for anybody that doesn't care for [her]" (860). Eliza Doolittle continually manifested pride and a touchy sensitivity; however, once educated, the drastic change of experiencing a substantially improved social standing caused the development of visual confidence in her character. Armed with self-esteem, Eliza had the necessary force in her character to face adversity without doubting herself or relying on the strength of others. Works Cited Shaw, Bernard. Pygmalion. The Theme of Courage in Red Badge of Courage :: Red Badge Courage Essays

The Theme of Courage in Red Badge of Courage The Red Badge of Courage is a fictional psychological portrait of a young soldier named Henry Fleming, tracing the thread of his emotions and reactions to events that transpire during an unnamed battle of the Civil War (spark notes). Henry is an average farmer from New York. Henry wants to go to war and become a hero like the one he read about in his school. The story starts off with everyone sitting in regiment camp by the river with rumors flowing around. While everyone is thinking about what they will do in war, Henry was thinking of how is he going to react when he goes to the battlefields. How would he react if he was to die? He said, no matter what happens he will not run from a fight. Two of the other guys in the army had about the same courage as Henry, but none of them ever said that they will not run away. Before he can go on to fight in battle, the army puts him in a battle to see if he runs away from fight or not. The northern army is finally put on the move and marched across the river, where they meet with Southern forces. Henry's regiment takes a reserve position, so Henry gets to see a battle before going in to an action himself. Finally his regiment drives back the enemy and Henry feels a joy of success. Then enemy charges again, but Henry flees thinking his regiment will be overrun by the enemy. As he running and trying to justify to himself why he is running. When he gets to the woods he sees a dead man in a clearing. Henry takes the man and runs to the army's rear to get the man some help. Instead he finds his friend Jim Conkin from his regiment, who has been shot in the side. Henry tried to help Jim with another man called "Tattered Soldier." Jim could not hold on and died. After Jims death, Henry felt angry and left the Tattered Soldier alone to die in field, but it always came back to haunt Henry. After he leaves the Tattered Soldier, he sees the enemy charging and rushes back to the union regiment.

Harper Lees To Kill a Mockingbird :: essays research papers

One of the principal aims of To Kill a Mockingbird is to subject the narrator to a series of learning experiences and then observe how much she profits from her experiences. There is rarely a chapter that does not teach Scout something new or does not build toward a new learning experience. So, one rewarding approach to the novel is throughout an examination of these experiences.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the largest view, Scout learns about (1) justice and injustice through the Tom Robinson trial; (2) prejustice and its effects on the processes of the law and society; (3) courage as manifested in ways others act; and (4) respect for individuality of the human being. On a smaller scale, Scout learns numerous things about numerous people; she becomes aware of the difficulty of being a lady, particularly when under dressed; and she learns when to fight and not to fight.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Many of scouts learning experiences being in clearly insignificant scenes. Ultimately she must learn to respect the difference in behavior between vastly different people, especially when the behavior differs from the normal as radically as in the cases of Boo Radley, Mrs. Dubose, and the Cunninghams. So early in the novel, Scout in the novel, Scout is faced with some confusing experiences at school, where she confronts a teacher who dosen’t understand why she can read and where she meets Walter Cunningham. Later, Atticus explains to her that to judge a person you must try to see things from that person’s point of view. You must learn to walk aroun in his skin. Then you cab uderstand better why a person acts or belives what he does.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Only at the end of the novel does Scout finally learn to respect this saying. Until then, she remains curious and confused why Boo never came out of his house. In the meantime she goes through a series of maturing experiences. She learns how to see her from the teachers point of view; she tries to judge the Cunninghams and the Ewells from their side; she bears the insults of the town and particularly the apperent viciousness of Mrs. Duboes. From all of these, she learns to look at the individuality of the others!   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  For Scout, courage is most often something with physical act and involves personal danger. It is very difficult for Scout to see that greater courage is often required in other places of life. Scout learns that the greatest courage can be found in a situation where a person knows that he is going to lose and still continues to fight.

Mao’s Last Dancer

Text: Mao’s Last Dancer I chose the autographical novel ‘Mao’s Last Dancer’, composed by Li Cunxin, as it has several themes that convey the idea of a journey. It is physical in the way Li Cunxin had to work hard to be a professional ballet dancer and it is also mental as it is a road to self-discovery. The autobiography is also extremely inspirational and inscribed in first person, therefore this allows the reader to see the personal journey of Li.I believe this text also relates to Shakespeare’s play ‘The Tempest’ in the way Li has to act like a slave to the Communist Mao. This is similar to the enslavement of the characters Caliban and Ariel. The main physical journey represented in the text is how dancing shaped and became Li’s life. When he was chosen to be in Madame Mao’s ballet academy, he had no desire to be there. ‘Those first few weeks were an agony of loneliness†¦I became introverted and spoke very lit tle†¦everyday I couldn’t wait for the year to end’.Later on though, you notice through emotive language the determination he has to be the best. ‘I challenged myself to go further, to experiment with new feelings. ’ He had to leave his family, who live in an awfully poor village, so he can be a dancer. Further along in life he became one of the most elite ballet dancers China has produced. Madame Mao then took him to America to enhance his skills; he won many medals and now lives in Melbourne. Coming from a poor family, to now being rich and famous shows incredible juxtaposition and the concept of a journey.Another idea is the emotional journey of this text. In the story you notice many qualities that Li possesses like bravery and courage. At the beginning of the story you sense the tone of unhappiness, knowing he cannot contact them for years. ‘I am frightened. I want to go home to my niang. I start to sob. ’ For the first year of ballet school, his confidence was low and he constantly felt like people were judging him but from his fourth year onwards he had willpower and strength to move forward. Finally, in his sixth year, Teacher Xiao had a chat with him and he used a simile, saying a pirouette is like a mango. This helps you create a clear image in your mind. ‘The fun is in the process. Admire the unique shape, the colour, the smell. You need to enjoy every bit of the process, taste the many layers of the fruit and enjoy it for it’s full value. I want you to treat pirouettes the same way. ’ This quote also represents a journey perfectly, saying it’s not about the outcome; it’s what you achieved along the way.

Dont Judge D Buk by Its Covrr

Dont legal expert a bulk by its turn to heart not to exertion on wad or things by what they imagine identical from the egressside. People shouldnt be heard by how they come out but be testd by their actions. It actually means that quite a little cannot be judged by what they appear like to you at first, it is necessary to exit to roll in the hay them and present them before you can judge them It means not to judge concourse by the way they look or act. Something genuinely powerful can be inside(a) them. it means dont judge a psyche on how they look and only judge them on who they in truth are If you judge a control by its cover is to judge soulfulness or something before you get to get by them or try it.Such as if psyche looks funny and you dont know them you shouldnt make fun of them because they could turn out to be the nicest somebody you ever met. likewise if someone advertises for a product and you dont calculate it lead subject field you shouldnt because it might work really impregnable and it will be fun and/or good for you to have. On the some other hand something could look good and be really bad. So if someone is really pretty that doesnt mean Oh, that person is really pretty they must be nice They could be really stuck up and mean. Or if something looks shiny and new and people on TV. say it works really good it could be bad.The meaning of the construction never judge a admit by its cover is that we cant simply judge people only by their appearances. exclusively, this is not incessantly true. For instance, if an employer wants to recruit an employee and hundreds of people apply, the employer will in all probability narrow the list down ground on first impressions. In other words, the employer is judging them by their cover to save time. But when it comes to choosing friends, we have to need carefully. Some people might be bad for us. If we choose them ravishly, the consequences are very serious the wrong kin ds of friends can create all kinds of ail for us.I think, rather than judging a contain by its cover, we need to read the theme of the book and base our judgments on what we think there. You shouldnt form an opinion on someone or something based purely on what you see on the surface, because usually after(prenominal) taking a deeper look, the person or thing will not be what you expected it to be. When looking for something to read, people will often times only glint at the cover of a book before making a decision. due(p) to this, many books get overlooked barely due to the title or yield on the front of them being unkindly to the eye. However, if one were to open the book up and peer into its contents, theyd probably find that they were lacking out on some kindle and valuable information. Hence, dont judge a book by its cover The phrase is alike applied to people. How? Well, before getting to know someone, a person tends to first judge others based on their outward appe arance, their nationality, or other external factors. Its a shame, though, because plot a person might look rough on the outside, you can never truly know what they are like on the inside unless you open them up and get to know them
